About RI E911
RI E911 Rules & Regulations
Rhode Island is one of two states in the country to provide enhanced
911 emergency services on a statewide basis. Trained 911 telecommunicators
employ advanced telephone and computer technologies to process all 911
police, fire and rescue calls originating within the State of Rhode
Island. The system automatically identifies the location of wireline
calls, making it unnecessary for a wireline caller to verbally communicate
an address or public safety jurisidiction. Calls are transferred instantaneosly
to the appropriate agency for response.
Most Rhode Island wireless telephone subscribers receive FCC Phase
I/II wireless 911 services. The system's operations are partially funded
by a one dollar per month surcharge on the state's telephone subscribers.
Of the six wireless carriers operating in Rhode Island, only one wireless
carrier has not provided the requisite data to the Division by which
wireless caller information is obtained. To fully implement Phase II
of FCC Order 94-102, as revised, the Division is developing GIS data
for utilization with other existing map/data layers provided by the
R. I. Department of Transportation and the Rhode Island Geographic Information
system (RIGIS).
